Aeration
Lawn aeration involves the removal of small soil plugs or cores out of the lawn. Although hand aerators are available, most aeration is done mechanically with a machine having hollow tines or spoons mounted on a disk or drum. Known as core aeration, it extracts 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter cores of soil and deposits them on your lawn. Aeration holes are typically 1-3 inches deep and 2-6 inches apart. Other types of aerators push solid spikes or tines into the soil without removing a plug (spiking). These are not as effective because they can contribute to compaction. Core aeration is a recommended lawn care practice on compacted, heavily used turf and to control thatch buildup.

Detaching
Lawn dethatchers look very much like large lawn mowers; however, they have vertical rows of blades that slice through turf and rip up thatch through the grass. As the blades move across the lawn, they pull up the excessive thatch. The amount of thatch that is removed depends on how low the blades are set and how far apart. Typically, blades are set 2 inches apart Dethatching blades that contain knives or blades are best to use because they remove the most thatch without causing damage to your lawnmower or grass. When using a dethatching blade, we set the height to 1/8 to 1/4 inch above a sidewalk or driveway next to the lawn that is to be dethatched. The blades will penetrate and slice through the layer of thatch, cutting it up and lifting it to the surface of the lawn. We run the blades over the lawn two to three times, alternating the direction to ensure that the maximum amount of thatch is removed.

Top Dressing
Topdressing’s benefits are so numerous, it’s hard to understand why it is not the foundation for every lawn care program. Topdressing can improve soil biology by adding organic matter and the beneficial microorganisms found in compost. Soil structure and drainage can be modified by topdressing with sand or other corrective materials. Topdressing regularly can smooth out bumps caused by worm castings and encourages a dense, lush lawn. Topdressing reduces Lawn Stresses, helps keep thatch under control, and acts as a long-term natural fertilizer. Adding organic matter to a lawn by topdressing with compost is arguably the most beneficial cultural practice that the science of lawn care has to offer.

Soil & Mulch
Mulch helps to moderate soil temperature and retain soil moisture which is good for the health of your plants. Adding a layer of mulch to your flower beds also improves the appearance of your beds and suppresses weed growth. Additionally organic mulches provide nutrients to your plants as they breakdown.
Garden soil is compost enriched and is a higher quality soil. Garden soil is topsoil enriched with compost and organic matter to make it better suited to actual plant growth. The addition of compost will reduce compaction and also provide nutrients that will feed the plants over many years.
